A day of bright colours, music, and song and dance took place on Friday 9th May in our school. Pupils, teachers and parents gathered in the school to celebrate International Day, which has become an annual event.
Pupils dressed in traditional costumes and in a dazzling array of colours representing flags from all around the globe.
A concert was held in the school hall in which all class groups took part. A feast of singing, dancing and music was enjoyed from places the world over. Concert items that originated in Ireland, Australia, France, the West Indies and the USA, to name a few, were performed. Two young Spanish teaching students who have spent four months helping teachers in Holy Family GNS were delighted to hear songs performed in their native tongue. Musical accompaniment, percussion instruments and fun dancing moves all added to the festive atmosphere.
Parents were busy cooking and preparing food from their native lands which was sent into school for pupils to sample and enjoy.
Thanking pupils, parents and staff for making international day such a success, the principal, Mrs. Costello, commented on how we can learn so much by sharing and working together. She stated that “ the aim of the celebration was to enable our pupils to appreciate the richness of the diversity of cultures which are represented in the school and to develop the pupils’ respect for life-styles different from their own so that they can understand and appreciate each other”.
