On Friday 17th February, the whole school community celebrated International Day. We celebrated the cultures of the 36 countries that are represented in our school. This celebration involved the pupils in all of the classes dressing up either in the national costumes of their native countries or wearing the colours of their native country. Each classed performed on stage. There was a wide range of performances, ranging from dance- Irish dancing song from Australia, Africa, West Indies, America, France, Poland and Trinidad to name but a few. Some classes recited poetry and a number of classes put on musical performances. The performances concluded with 4th class singing ‘We are one’, which was one of the songs they had recently performed at the Peace Proms concert at the RDS. The celebration concluded with the whole school singing our national anthem, ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’.
The aim of the celebration is to enable our pupils to appreciate the richness of the diversity of cultures which are represented in the school and to develop the pupils’ respect for life-styles different from their own so that they can understand and appreciate each other.
