Winners in ‘Yeats Among Schoolchildren’ competition

by Holy Family G.N.S. on 23 June 2015 20:27

We were very excited to hear that one of our pupils, Wiki Rochnowska, 4th class, Room 10, was one of just four winners from the southeast whose work is published in a book of art and poetry celebrating the great Irish poet, WB Yeats.  ‘Yeats Among Schoolchildren’ competition is one of the principal events taking place this year as part of Yeats 2015. Primary school students from all over Ireland were invited to submit an artwork based on their interpretation of a Yeats’ poem, and a book of the winning entries was launched in celebration of the poet’s birthday on Friday, 12th June.

The ‘Yeats Among Schoolchildren’ competition invited children to draw, paint or write a poem based on one of WB Yeats’ poems. Wiki’s drawing and poem was based on ‘The Lake Isle of Inisfree’. Wiki was presented with a framed certificate by Ms. Jan O’ Sullivan, Minister for Education and Skills at a prize giving ceremony in Kilkenny Education Centre on Wednesday 6th May and on Friday 12th June, she travelled with her family to Sligo, to receive a copy of the book, ‘The Magic Within’.

Eleven other pupils in our school were highly commended for their work, they are:

Gabriele Simkute, Alice Jacob, Jacqueline Holguin, Emma Nulty, Judyta Dzierba, Robyn Doyle, Michaela Kuhne, Rachel Diyaolu, Amelia Hamulewicz, Emilia Hamulewicz and Isra Tarig. Well done girls, we are so proud of you.
